REVIEW ROUNDUP?

ThatHITBOX Review Roundup’s are built to cover a broad selection of recent indie releases. There will likely be no running theme or connective tissue between any of the titles; just two or three games that stood out, and might be worth a look. In much the same way as the rest of our review coverage, each title will be given a final score.

We’re kicking things off with a review of Chippy, a twin stick bullet hell shooter from Facepunch Studios (developers of Garry’s Mod and Rust). We’re then taking a look at tinyBuild’s Lovely Planet 2, a disarmingly cheerful time trial FPS. Closing things out for this roundup is Supermarket Shriek, from Billy Goat Entertainment, a recent Xbox Game Pass addition that supports screaming as an input method. There is also a goat.

CHIPPY - It’s to Facepunch Studio’s credit that they’re willing to experiment with new ideas. Alongside a few other in development projects (including Flotel, a Theme Hospital style management sim), Chippy takes the bullet hell twin stick shooter formula, and hones in on boss battles and leaderboard functionality. It’s not overflowing with content, but there’s a pleasant depth to the combat; you can upgrade your main weapon, and utilise powerups that can either slow down time, repel incoming fire, or freeze everything in place. The controls are responsive, and the art style, a sort of cel shading meets pixel art combo platter, gives the game a unique vibe that sets it apart. It definitely has that ‘one more go’ quality. 4/5

Yep. Things do get pretty intense. Fortunately, quick reflexes are rewarded and you’re never left fighting the controls.

LOVELY PLANET 2 - TinyBuild should be applauded for the breath of their software lineup, and I’m happy to report that Lovely Planet 2 is another quirky addition to their portfolio. Sure, the graphics are incredibly basic, and the menu’s / overall presentation isn’t great, but at its core, there’s fun to be had here. You’ll shoot, dodge, and leap your way through a series of extremely short levels, dealing with an ever escalating challenge and a ticking clock. Speed and accuracy are the key elements here, as you attempt to best your own times and overcome the odds. There’s definite Japanese Anime vibes, especially in some of the sound effects and art style, and you can be sure that it’ll run on even the most basic of PC setups. Weird, but also kinda cool. 3/5

SUPERMARKET SHRIEK - You’ll think you’ve seen it all. And then, Billy Goat Entertainment comes along, and drops a game about a man and a goat, screaming their way around a world in ruins. Although you can play the traditional way (with a pleasingly simple two button set up), you’d be remiss not to plug in a mic and attempt to navigate through the various physics based courses by yelling at the top of your voice. Co-op play complicates things even further, with two players able to jump in on the action. It’s totally bonkers, and very slapstick, but you’ll also find yourself going back to improve previous rankings. Movement can be a little frustrating, regardless of your input setting, but the sheer originality of this title deserves recognition. 3/5

CHIPPY (PC)

Squares with angry faces have never been so threatening. Not this one though. This one is friendly. He has friendly eyebrows.

LOVELY PLANET 2 (PC)

Whoever is designing these stores is definitely a Bond villain. You’ll face lava pits, swinging axes, and endless other hazards.

SUPERMARKET SHRIEK (XB1, & PC)
