MOOD SWINGS?

Besides being the obvious side effect to a hormonal outburst, ‘Mood Swings’ is an editorial crafted by our editor Jay Tee, alongside contributions from the team. It’s like a series of extended tweets, ranting or raving about something terrible / great that has happened in the world of gaming. It’s a collection of random musings designed to provide a snapshot of what we’re doing, things you should be excited for, and stuff to avoid as you navigate the choppy waters of this wonderfully unpredictable hobby.

Anything, from reactions to a new game announcement, surprising breaking news, to “our cat just nibbled our thumb sticks”, can be found here. We try to be as honest as possible, sharing our gut reactions to stuff that has occurred in the last twenty four hours.

ANIMAL CROSSING - A welcome bombardment of relentless positivity has followed the release of New Horizons, and it took me a few days for its impact to truly sink in. I’ve been dipping back in regularly, stealing a few fleeting moments of escape from the onslaught of writing assignments, review code, and PR e-mails. Despite the madness of what’s going on around the world right now, it has injected a welcome dose of chill into my daily routine. I’m anxious to check the store stock each day, collect my Nook Miles, see what else has progressed, but without the feeling like I’m somehow behind the curve or missing out. Any in game opportunities that pass me by due to real life commitment don’t feel like a loss; just another divergent path in my ongoing story.

I have a holodeck on my floor. Because Star Trek is awesome.

THE COUNCIL - In these uncertain times, the games industry and those in its orbit have done lovely, charitable, and kind things to make this situation that little bit easier to bare. For every story about panic buying or disgraceful behaviour, there’s innumerable demonstrations of good will and faith in humanity restoring acts that serve only to ease the stress of our present circumstances. One recurring gesture has been free weekend play sessions and whole game giveaways, with a huge number of publishers and developers pitching in. One such example is Focus Home Interactive’s The Council, an episodic narrative adventure. The first episode is now free to download, and it’s absolutely worth a look.

RESIDENT EVIL RESISTANCE - We recently published our hands on impressions from the open beta, but despite our in depth breakdown and explanation as to why it doesn’t work for us, there’s a lingering tinge of disappointment that I simply cannot shake. I’d made grand plans for Resistance to be the big multiplayer drop in April, a way to unite my gaming pals with an intense new experience. Unfortunately, all the beta has done has made me want to jump back in to World War Z, in spite of its current lack of proper cross play support. It has even made me question whether I now want to pick up Resident Evil 3 remake at launch, given my excessive gaming backlog and workload. It’s a shame, and I think this beta could potentially do more harm for RE:3 than good…
