MOOD SWINGS?

Besides being the obvious side effect to a hormonal outburst, ‘Mood Swings’ is an editorial crafted by our editor Jay Tee, alongside contributions from the team. It’s like a series of extended tweets, ranting or raving about something terrible / great that has happened in the world of gaming. It’s a collection of random musings designed to provide a snapshot of what we’re doing, things you should be excited for, and stuff to avoid as you navigate the choppy waters of this wonderfully unpredictable hobby.

Anything, from reactions to a new game announcement, surprising breaking news, to “our cat just nibbled our thumb sticks”, can be found here. We try to be as honest as possible, sharing our gut reactions to stuff that has occurred in the last twenty four hours.

CALL OF DUTY: WARZONE AND XBOX LIVE - Activision’s standalone battle royale effort is clearly making waves, but one aspect of this new release (that admittedly isn’t their fault) is the paywall required to access the game on Xbox One. A premium Gold subscription is needed for all free to play titles, and Warzone is no exception. Given all of the forward thinking and genuinely brilliant moves that Microsoft have made with Game Pass, cross platform play, and backwards compatibility, this feels like an archaic policy holdover from years past that should be immediately revised. With rival platforms taking a no nonsense, common sense approach to this issue, it feels like the time is right to do a quick switcheroo and make this right.

This one is free to play. OR IS IT?! Well… it is, but you know, not on Xbox. Because… reasons?

HORIZON ZERO DAWN ON PC - Sony’s confirmation of a PC port for Guerilla’s seminal RPG is an exciting move that will get fresh eyeballs on an incredible experience, and likely help build hype for the inevitable next gen sequel. Unfortunately, a small minority of hardcore PlayStation “fans” have decried the move as betraying the irrefutable law of platform exclusives and are kicking up quite a stink. And by quite a stink, I mean twelve people on Twitter expressing totally misdirected rage at something that is objectively a good thing for everyone involved. A whole new audience gets to jump in to a fantastic game, while Sony broadens the franchises appeal as they prep for PS5’s debut.

E3 GOES DIGITAL - Given today’s cancellation of E3 2020, it was to be expected that the major players previously involved with the show would present some kind of back up plan. Microsoft and Ubisoft have both committed to producing a form of digital showcase, likely incorporating their planned press conference reveals into a “Nintendo Direct / State of Play” style format. While the pageantry and scale of the live theatre shows will be sorely missed, the ESA’s move to suspend the event is a timely and responsible move. Public safety is dominating the conversation worldwide, and it’s sensible for them to take precautionary measures. The impact on behind closed doors deals, and even similar upcoming shows like Gamescom, remains to be seen.
