MOOD SWINGS?

Besides being the obvious side effect to a hormonal outburst, ‘Mood Swings’ is an editorial crafted by our editor Jay Tee, alongside contributions from the team. It’s like a series of extended tweets, ranting or raving about something terrible / great that has happened in the world of gaming. It’s a collection of random musings designed to provide a snapshot of what we’re doing, things you should be excited for, and stuff to avoid as you navigate the choppy waters of this wonderfully unpredictable hobby.

Anything, from reactions to a new game announcement, surprising breaking news, to “our cat just nibbled our thumb sticks”, can be found here. We try to be as honest as possible, sharing our gut reactions to stuff that has occurred in the last twenty four hours.

GOOGLE STADIA - In what feels like an announcement that should have been made months ago, Google have revealed that Stadia Base, the free to access, non subscription based version of their cloud based streaming service, is now available, alongside a quarantine friendly Stadia Pro promotion that sees their monthly service go free for two months. Of course, I jumped at the chance to take it for a whirl, especially considering my hefty fibre package that performs as though I’m plugged directly into NASA. Upon booting up GRID, what I discovered was both surprising and baffling in equal measure; Stadia works really well, with basically no latency in 1080p. The problems that remain are the obscene game pricing, and lacklustre library. Solve this, and they could rebound.

A silly name, and a silly logo. Forgettable and nonsensical. Come on Phil!

GROUNDED - I’m extremely excited for this. Obsidian are a fantastic studio, and this is exactly the kind of title perfectly suited to the Game Pass model. Microsoft have done an excellent job positioning their Xbox Game Studio’s to support multi team development, and spinning off a small group to work on a scaled down effort makes a world of sense. Better still, they’re even considering us spider fearing humans, with the recent announcement of an “Arachnophobia Mode”. Although we don’t have exact details just yet, the notion that Obsidian are even considering this is beyond lovely. It’s also symptomatic of their reputation for being thoughtful and inclusive, and once again elevates them above the noise.

DUALSENSE - I think Sony’s radio silence / random news drop strategy is odd. I’m easily more excited for what Microsoft are doing with Xbox Series X, as I feel like they’re differentiating themselves with services like Game Pass and Smart Delivery, whilst also explaining what their new platform is doing from a hardware perspective that sets it apart. I say these things as someone who owns every platform incidentally, should the Internet be awash with cries of bias. The reveal of the PS5 controller, DualSense, is another weird play; I actually really like the design, but I can’t get excited about a “Create” button replacing the “Share” button, when they haven’t said what it means. Assuring people that it does infact have a headphone jack isn’t enough!
