Hotshot Racing is a rapid injection of nostalgic traits mixed with a package so slick it could be oil. This is an arcade racer that evokes the fondest memories of generations that came before, at a budget price that is frankly a steal given the amount of modes and configurable player set ups. It’s responsive, addicting, and without question one of the best indie titles we’ve played in years.

Hyperbole aside, we cannot argue with the facts and figures; four player split screen with a tightly locked frame rate, A.I. racers in both private and online lobbies, a competitive ranked playlist, time trials, Grand Prix, and both character and vehicle customisation. All of this is available from the moment you boot up. Suck it recent Need for Speed’s.

You’ll be a challenge earning drift ninja within minutes, and the banging soundtrack will remain etched in your mind well after you wrap. There’s opportunities to trade off and interchange vehicle attributes, with acceleration, speed, and drift stats present and accounted for to ensure your playstyle is catered to. It’s as polished and feature complete a game as any arcade racer from this generation of console and PC hardware.

There’s also something so refreshing about a game that takes its time to cook, before absolutely nailing a few key attributes. The feel of a high speed drift, earning your boost with skilful cornering, the thrill of competing against ghosts to increase your leaderboard standing, the sense of pace and momentum; all aspects that make Hotshot Racing sing.

The graphics are simplified without sacrificing character, and there’s a ton of tiny flourishes in every track that could go unnoticed despite repeat playthroughs. It’s this pervasive attention to detail that permeates from every pore of this unassuming gem, and if it hasn’t been made abundantly clear by this point, this is a really good video game.

Buy it. It’s amazing. Or play it on Xbox Game Pass, which didn’t need be that much cooler, but because of Hotshot Racing, it most certainly is.

WORTH IT?

AND

YEAH!
Hotshot Racing is a phenomenal racer and represents the very best the genre has to offer.

Because it’s so accessible and feature rich, other competing titles will really need to up their game.

TARPS?

BETTER THAN:

WORSE THAN:

At the bottom of some of our articles, you’ll see a series of absurd looking images (with equally stupid, in joke laden names). These are the TARP badges, which represent our ‘Totally Accurate Rating Platform’. They allow us to identify specific things, recognise positive or negative aspects of a games design, and generally indulge our consistent silliness with some visual tomfoolery.

The BOOTS ON THE GROUND badge is for a game you need to play as soon as possible. Don’t leave this one for your backlog!

The HOMEBOY badge is for the kind of game that is perfect for playing at home, AND when you’re on the go.

The EXCITING TIMES badge is for a game that has regular moments of sheer enjoyment that remind you of why videogames are great.

The BEVERLY badge is for a game that would make even Jean-Luc Picard want to spend time with Wesley.

The SKYPE RINGTONE badge is for a game with a catchy soundtrack that you can’t help but love.

The COUCH MADNESS badge is awarded when a game nails split/same screen gameplay.

The STRAIGHT AND STEADY badge is for a game that comes out the gate in a good state.
