GEARS 5 OPERATION 3: GRIDIRON

Operation 3: Gridiron is easily The Coalition’s most accomplished update to date, with a genuinely cracking new game mode and a whole mess of character customisation content that thankfully is no longer a chore to unlock. The Tour of Duty system now tracks typical actions across a whole mess of different game modes, which ensures that you won’t be stuck grinding away doing something you don’t enjoy. Returning favourite map Canals guarantees a good time, especially if you’re proficient with a sniper rifle.

“Despite being built with an emphasis on teamplay and cover flanking, Gears can often feel like a solo experience, particularly if you're playing alongside folks determined to embrace a lone wolf play style. Gridiron addresses this head on; co-ordination is vital, as you either push for a squad wipe, or hang back to guard your endzone from a sneaky flag delivery.

The stakes feel high and the round speed is tuned just right, meaning you're never too far from the action should things go sideways earlier than expected. Returning map Canals is a welcome nod to legacy multiplayer, but it's new arena "Pahanu" that is the true highlight. Sight-lines are much clearer than you'd expect, but don't think this will become a sniper's paradise; as with all asymmetric Gears maps, heavy weapon pickups leave you massively exposed, and there's plenty of cover to bunker down should you come under fire”.

I AM YOUR TORQUE BOW NEMESIS. Seriously.

Canals is a return to sniper dominated sightlines, while Pahanu is ripe with flanking opportunities. Gridiron is fun.

The crunch of an execution, Torque Bow hit, and squelch of a headshot are present and accounted for here.

Gridiron demands team work and communication, but 2v2’s repurposed new maps feel a little slight, which is a shame.

Visually stunning as always, Gears 5 continues to shine brightest on Xbox One X, and the rock solid frame rate makes this a dream to play.

THE LAST WORD

Gears 5 Operation 3: Gridiron is easily The Coalition’s most accomplished update, and hopefully a sign of good things to follow.

THE FINAL SCORE

4/5

REVIEW POLICY

We use a simple “out of 5” rating criteria for all reviews.

4 out of 5 is GREAT.

A positive, varied experience, with plenty of reasons to invest. Even if it’s just shy of perfection.
