Paddle of doom.

Bloodroots will leave you in awe of its ambition, and cursing that moment you decided to manually jump over that precipice instead of vaulting with a convenient pipe. It’s all about speed and reactions, and even the slightest misstep can send you straight back to the start of an area. By developer Paper Cult’s own admission, this is a challenging game from the off, but once you’ve got your head around the pace of combat, you’ll soon find yourself pulling off feats of Jason Bourne-
“Through a combination of jump, grab, and attack, you'll string together vast combos and make use of melee and ranged strikes to send your enemies careening into all manner of destructible constructs.
Presentation wise, it's an impressive effort, with a rock solid frame rate on Nintendo Switch, and wonderfully reactive environments that shatter and crumble in response to your actions. Your tools of the trade are bountiful, and balanced by their fragility. For most items, three successful hits and it will break, so you'll constantly be scrambling to secure something fresh.
The real fun starts when movement and attacks are combined, with barrels and hay carts offering hilarious physics based destruction”.
Ladders are lethal. Never forget that.
Movement, weapon grab, attack, and jump. These are the four things to consider from the outset, and you’ll quickly find your feet.
The music is great, but the absence of voice acting is a glaring omission, especially when the story is so well written.
Prepare for that learning curve to hit a steep incline. You’ll die often, sometimes at the final hurdle, but it’s still a lot of fun.
In terms of performance, it runs extremely well on Switch, with crisp, stylised graphics evoking a Tarantino western.
THE LAST WORD
Bloodroots is a punishing but riotously good time, with a level of polish that exceeds expectation.
THE FINAL SCORE
We use a simple “out of 5” rating criteria for all reviews.
4 out of 5 is GREAT.
A positive, varied experience, with plenty of reasons to invest. Even if it’s just shy of perfection.
